Class Surveys
Statistical surveys of my classes in Xiangtan,
conducted by students on topics they deem important.
These surveys were given as part of my final in business English at the Hunan Institute of Engineering's International Studies Department. Each student had to ask at least 50 students their opinion, collect comments, and give a simple analysis of the data.

Students expressed a strong desire to leave China for employment because of a lower population density, the potential for earning a higher income than in mainland China, and the ease of finding employment due to a high number of companies to work for.
20% of students surveyed were not interested in working or studying abroad. According to another survey. 57% were not interested in moving abroad for any reason.
Of those who were, boys were slightly more likely than girls to want to immigrate (44% boys/36% girls).
In conversations with me, students main concerns about moving abroad were about the costs involved. In surveys, students were most concerned were general stress (48%), discrimination (24% - especially concerning America), and crime (12%). 64% said they felt the benefits were more important than any troubles.

TaiBei is the provincial capital of Taiwan. Also, Taiwan is one of the 'Four Dragons' of East Asia. TaiBei is a modern and advanced city. All Chinese people know Taiwan is a part of China and every Chinese people all has a draw in their heart. They all pray and believe Taiwan will join China sooner or later, and make up a good family as soon as possible.
[Those who] say Taiwan can independence student's reason is want break out the war. They are students very like war. I think Taiwan can't independence. Because Taiwan people and mainland people is don't like war. I hope Taiwan can come back. I think say Taiwan can independence students only like war. If they Taiwan's independence they is not happy.
When do you think China will recover Taiwan?

85% feel Taiwan should be part of China.
48% surveyed think it is unlikely that the US will use force against Iran because Iran is stronger than Iraq. Once attacked Iran will not sit still waiting for death. They will take action against the military bases of the US. Those who are not sure say the situation is becoming too complex to say.
While girls are evenly split on which country provides the best living conditions, boys strongly prefer the United States (50%) to Canada (25%), England (15%), or other English speaking countries (10%).

The people who chose 'yes' are mostly of girls. It is believed girl always think that the thing change me, not I change the thing.
60% believe they can recieve a better education abroad than in China.
The most popular countries for students to want to study abroad are: Australia, England, the USA, and Canada.
(NB - The program these students were enrolled in was run by an Australian school.)
56% are interested in going abroad after graduation.
56% also think there are better teaching conditions abroad.
However strongly they might feel about the potential of studying abroad, 40% prefer the common environment and language of home.
Computers are more fun than math.
70% enjoy literature, but only 56% of those enjoy classical Chinese literature.
100% of those surveyed love Jessica. =)
In modern times, homosexual appearance is more and more common. People's ideology becomes more and more open. Most people think we can love free. So homosexual is a natural thing.
1/3 to 1/5 claim to be in a steady relationship.
64% think boys and girls living together during University is a bad idea.
84% think it is acceptable for middle school students to court. This is currently somewhere between frowned upon and against the rules. Students suspected of dating could technically be removed from classes or punished.
65% would not marry a foreigner.
85% find double-fold eyelids more attractive. Students agree single fold eyelids suit men better than women.
When asked "Is beauty guilty?" 19.5% of students responded yes.
Life, Death, Family, & Entertainment
Very few people think they will change into a ghost because it is very bad and terrible.
90% watch cartoons.
Girls think pigs are the lovliest animals, while boys choose dogs. Other popular favorites are ducks and cats.
White is a popular favorite color, whereas 2/3 think yellow is a "bad" color.
Shopping and natural beauty are the top reasons students listed for wanting to travel.
70% of students listen to pop music. The rest enjoy classical.
Going to the cinema is more popular than watching movies at home.
76% are only children.
After a lecture on nutrition, 98% reported they "always eat nutrients." Only 4% said they try to loose weight by not eating. Previous to my nutrition lesson, the girls would often talk about dieting methods such as eating lemons or smoking cigarettes "for lunch" during open conversation practice.
62.5% of boys report smoking 3-5 cigarettes per day, while 28.5% regularly smoke 5 or more. Half the girls do not smoke at all, and 80% of those who do smoke less than three a day.
Cola is steeply preferred over juice.

For some reason, the bottom of my teaching notebook in this section says "banana ice cream tomato beer." I wonder if this was a real beverage?
