Beautiful Teachers

It is understood that physical beauty sells – especially the physical beauty of women. Most cultures attempt to at least superficially keep sexuality out of the classroom, at least concerning the criterion for potential educators. This is not so in China. Before I started teaching I was introduced to several teachers who worked at HIE (most of which I never saw again). Upon first introductions, they took one look at me and decreed that I would make a fantastic teacher, despite my lack of experience in business, education, in the Chinese language and educational system. I was not to be a fantastic addition to their staff because of my youthful vigor, my charming personality, or my ability to entertain and monkey around for two hour blocks of class time.

Why did they immediately feel I would make a fantastic addition to their staff? Simply because they knew the students would find me attractive.

In Hong Kong, the after-school tutoring service Modern Education is now publicizing the mini-skirt clad models and beauty pageant women who make up part of their staff. “Their long legs are the most beautiful ones in the tutorial industry," said Ken Ng, head of Modern Education1.
